HEALING

HEALING
SEA CHANGE GALLERY
PORTLAND, OREGON
JUNE 26, 2009

We are grateful to all those who attended our free/all ages HEALING event at SEA Change Gallery. Judy Fleming, Nic Ayers and Michelle Wruck curated, and Rozzell Medina helped to facilitate this holistic event.

The event featured many presenters from the Portland healing community, including Will Hall from the Icarus Project, who opened up the evening by talking about mental health and healing. Will has battled schizophrenia, and now uses yoga, a healthy diet, and conscious lifestyle - instead of prescription medication - to deal with mental health issues. Will does very important work in the radical mental health community, and it was inspiring and educational to hear him speak, answer questions, and facilitate dialogue about this important aspect of healing.

Next, we had the pleasure of learning about sound healing from healer Meredith McFadden, who spoke about sound healing, then helped us ways to fill the gallery with our voices in a way that was simultaneously liberating, unifying, and healing. Next, she demonstrated a one-on-one sound healing session, which left Alec Neal blissed out for the rest of the evening.

Next, Andy Waltz and Christy Whitely spoke about healing and food, and attendees learned about how different kinds of raw foods can heal our bodies. Then, we got the opportunity to eat raw food, prepared by Kyler of Yummy Tummy Oasis.

Since we all felt that movement was an important healing tool, we invited Lane Ebb of Om Tradition Studios to lead us in a fun session of movement and healing. We played games that consisted of cradling each other, hoisting each other onto our backs, and creating a giant human pyramid. All forms of movement helped the attendees to become more familiar with each other, and we laughed a lot, which was healing in itself.

Then, Michelle Wruck facilitated a discussion about Native American medicine wheel and storytelling traditions, which she demonstrated on canvas. This evolved into
a discussion about the need (real and/or perceived) for ritual as communion and healing in contemporary society.

As an extra special treat at the end of the event, Mr. Mystery played us a song, showed us some magic, and spoke about the importance of believing in our own unique magical energy. A picture was taken of Mr. Mystery, but has since mysteriously disappeared.

We left feeling satisfied that we had brought together so many amazing healers from across the spectrum in one room.

More documentation forthcoming.
